Eikenella corrodens
General: Part of the HACEK group of fastidious gram- rods associated with subacute endocarditis.
Clinical:
- Normal: Upper respiratory tract.
- Abnormal: Endocarditis, bite wound, fistfight wound, meningitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, lung & brain abscesses.
Resistance: Resistant to oxacillin, 1st generation cephalosporins, clindamycin, erythromycin, and the aminoglycosides.
Morphology: Small to moderate sized (0.2 x 2.0um), nonmotile, non spore forming, gram- rod.
Growth characteristics: Fastidious facultative anaerobe which forms small (0.5-1.0mm), occasionally pitting ("corroding"), colonies at 48hrs on blood agar or chocolate agar and produces a characteristic bleach-like odor. Requires 5-10% CO2 and does not grow well on usual media for gram- rods.
