Enterococcus
General: Formerly classified as group D streptococcus.
Clinical:
- Normal: Colon and genitourinary tract.
- Abnormal: UTI, peritonitis, endocarditis.
Resistance: Optochin resistant. Commonly inherit or acquire resistances to commonly used oxacillin, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and vancomycin.
Morphology: Gram+ cocci in pairs and short chains.
Growth characteristics: Catalase- facultative anaerobes, grow optimally at 35C and most over a range from 10 - 45C or in high salt or bile. Complex nutritional needs; enriched blood agar. Produce large white colonies at 24hrs, variably hemolytic.
