Trichrome stain
General: The trichrome stain uses three different dyes simultaneously to show nuclei, cytoplasm, and collagen dyed in three different colors (the colors are dependent on the variation of this technique that is used). Useful in differentiating between fibrous and other tissue, such as muscle or non-collagenous matrix.
Standard/common uses: Evaluation of the type & amount of extracellular material. A widely used version is Masson's trichrome.
- Liver biopsies
- Renal biopsies
