Reticulin stain(s)
General: Highlight both basement membrane material and so-called reticulin fibers (mainly type IV collagen and laminin), NOT to be confused with reticulum cells. Most are silver based.
Specificity: Type IV collagen and laminin.
Staining characteristics: Black.
Function: Many possible uses, such as distinguishing epithelial from non-epithelial neoplasms, some mesenchymal neoplasms from one another, and in-situ from invasive carcinoma. Most commonly used in hematopathology in the evaluation of bone marrow biopsies.
Normal cell distribution: Basement membranes.
