Pap Smear (Papanicolaou smear, Pap test)
General: The Pap smear was first described in 1928 and proven efficacious by 1941 as a screening test for cervical cancer. There have been changes in the diagnostic reporting criteria and terminology ever since. As of this writing, the most widely accepted classification/reporting scheme is the 2001 revised Bethesda System, which happily has its own devoted book, so we can rest assured it is simple and easily reproducible.
