Oil Red O
General: Works on the principle that it is more soluble in the lipids in the material being stained than in their originating solvent, and is therefore nonspecific. Cannot be used on xylene processed tissue, as that eliminates tissue lipids.
Specificity: Nonspecifically stains tissue lipids.
Staining characteristics: Red. May be spotty and have a greasy character.
