Glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
Estimated GFR (eGFR, e-GFR)
General: An estimation of GFR can be made based on the serum creatinine, using a standardized equation (with corrections for sex, race, and age (height is also used in children)). Although useful in the outpatient setting for chronic renal failure / chronic renal insufficiency, it is not proven for healthy individuals or hospital inpatients; error creeps in at borderline or lower creatinine levels, and in patients with acute renal failure.

Measured GFR (GFR)
General: A more direct measurement of glomerular filtration rate, which analyzes the clearance of a given substance/marker over time. Ideal markers are those which are freely filtrated by the glomerulus, are not resorbed, and do not bind to serum proteins — thus minimizing other patient variables.
