Acinetobacter
General:
Clinical: Risk factors include use of respiratory care equipment, ICU, surgery. Usually nonpathogenic except in immunocompromised.
- Normal:
- Abnormal: Wounds, catheter sites, respiratory tract, urinary tract.
Resistance: Multiple resistances are common.
Morphology: Small Gram- coccobacilli, 1-1.5 x 1.5-2.5um, occuring singly or in pairs. May appear similar to Neisseria.
Growth characteristics: Colonies are smooth, opaque, gray-white, resembling Enterobacteriaceae. Oxidase-, nitrate-, nonmotile, nonfermentative; some strains oxidise glucose.
